Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze depression, anxiety levels and the ability to do activities of daily living in stroke patients who have only received occupational therapy with those who have also gone through a group occupational therapy program. This study was performed with 16 stroke patients between April 10th 2017 and May 17th 2017. The experimental group consisted of 8 patients who gave their consent to participate in a group occupational therapy program which included a therapeutic activity program. The control group consisted of 8 patients who received 60-minute individual occupational therapy sessions 7 times a week. These sessions continued for 6 weeks, with a total of 42 therapy sessions. Before the intervention, the subjects were tested using the Modified Barthel Index, the Beck Depression Inventory and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. After the intervention, the depression and anxiety inventory of the experimental group, who received the group occupational therapy program, and the control group, who received the individual occupational therapy, significantly increased. However, only the experimental group showed a significant increase in the performance of activities of daily living. The group occupational therapy program can have a positive effect on the usual psychological problems that appear after a stroke. Additionally, group occupational therapy is beneficial for stroke patients relearning activities of daily living.
